misool conservation centre

Misool Eco Resort (MER) is partnered with the charity Misool Conservation Centre (MCC). We coordinate many projects together. Here are a few of our current projects:

misool eco resort ranger patrol

Our Ranger Patrol is locally staffed and operated. Our Rangers have patrolled our 425 sq km No-Take Zone (NTZ) since 2006. In this area, it is prohibited to remove anything from the sea, including fish, shark fins, shells, turtles, and turtle eggs.

Thanks to funding from Wild Aid, The Coral Reef Alliance, Precious Planet, and many generous private donors, the Rangers now have a dedicated speed boat. Staffed primarily by Yellu residents Jainudin Bahale, Mohammed Loji, and Rajak Tahmer, they have a regular biweekly patrolling schedule. They also interact with liveaboards visiting our No-Take Zone, informing them about our NTZ as well as reinforcing the Operator's Code of Conduct, which prohibits boats from anchoring less than 60 metres from the reef, tying off on the reef, and dumping rubbish on the beaches. The patrol is active 24 hours a day, and will approach any suspicious boats on the horizon. They work in close cooperation with the local police department.

djabatan school project

The village of Yellu, which means 'Two Mountains' in the local Misool language, straddles a tiny strip of sandy land between two mountains. Yellu has expanded so that most of the houses are now built on stilts over the reef. A group of families has moved to a neighbouring island and started a new village called Dabatan. Unfortunately, the local government has failed to fund the village school. The 52 children in Djabatan are attending a make-shift primary school located in a village head's office.

Misool Conservation Centre supports two of the school teachers at the Djabatan School. Our friends Rachel Wigglesworth and Will Hutton have very kindly sponsored one of the school teacher's salaries for an entire year. Cecilia and Hugh Ross have also made a generous contribution, which has been used to purchase books and materials for the school.

Rajak, one of our Rangers, has just returned from a two month capacity building experience in Bali where he worked together with CORAL and Reef Check. One of the ideas Rajak developed together with CORAL's Naneng Setiasih was to create a 'Floating Library.' The idea is very simple - our Ranger Patrol will provide the transport, and once every two weeks will bring desperately needed books to the schools. Regular users will be issued library cards.

Misool Conservation Centre will also be making packages of school supplies, which MER's guests and supporters may easily purchase at cost. We'll deliver the package of exercise books, pencils, sharpeners, erasers, and a school bag to the neediest students. Watch this space... you'll be able to make your donation soon!

reef restoration project

The reefs around Misool Eco Resort and within our 425 sq km No-Take Zone are among the richest in the world. However, there are places which unfortunately have been bombed. We built our jetty over one such place, and have been making efforts to restore the reef.

In April of 2007, we initiated our first community Reef Restoration Project. Together with representatives from the local communities of Yellu and Fafanlap, we sank an iron framework just north of our jetty. One and a half years later, it's covered in soft corals and provides a great hiding place for reef fish.
